How to extend the RF range of the Caseta Hub (formerly Bridge)
This article describes how to extend the wireless RF signal range of the Caséta Smart Hub using the Caséta Repeater (PD-REP-WH) and/or the Caséta Plug-in Lamp Dimmer (PD-3PCL-WH).
Before You Begin
If you are experiencing any of the following issues, you may need to add a compatible Caséta wireless repeater and/or range extender to your system:
- Can not add a new Caséta device to the Lutron app.
- The device status in the Lutron app does not match the status of the load. For example, the app shows the switch is "On" however the light bulb/fixture is off.
- Schedules that worked reliably before now work intermittently or not at all.
- A message in the Lutron app states the device is no longer communicating with the system.
- A device does not respond to commands from the app but still functions manually.
Caséta Wireless Range
Although the Caseta smart hub broadcasts a wireless signal, it does not connect to Wi-Fi. The connection from your network to the hub is through ethernet. All communication from the smart hub to the Caseta devices is done via Lutron's proprietary radio frequency (RF) technology called Clear Connect Type-A (CCA).
The RF range of the Smart Hub (formerly Caséta Bridge) to the Caseta switches/dimmers, Pico remotes, and shades is 30 ft (9 m) in all directions.
In some homes, devices may be installed beyond the range of the Caséta Smart Hub. If it is not possible to relocate the hub so that it is within range of all devices, a Caséta Wireless Repeater and/or Plug-in Lamp Dimmer can be added to the system to extend the RF range.
Note: Only the first Caséta Plug-in Lamp dimmer added to a system acts as a range extender. Only one Caséta Wireless Repeater can be added to a system.
The Wireless Repeater must be within 60 ft (18 m) of the Smart Hub. The Plug-in Lamp Dimmer (PD-3PCL) must be within 30 ft (9 m) of the Smart Hub or Wireless Repeater.
Lutron recommends installing the smart hub in a centralized location relative to the Caseta devices in the home whenever possible. Do not install the smart hub or wireless repeater in a metal enclosure. Doing so can reduce the system's maximum RF signal range.
Caséta Wireless Repeater (PD-REP-WH)
The Caséta Wireless repeater extends the range of the RF signals sent from the Smart Hub to the Caséta devices. The wireless repeater communicates with Caséta devices within 30 ft (9 m), covering an area of approximately 2500 ft2, and can be placed up to 60 ft (18 m) from the Caseta Smart Hub.
Here are some additional things to consider concerning the Caséta Wireless Repeater
- The wireless repeater counts toward the 75-device system limit.
- Only one wireless repeater can be added per system.
- The wireless repeater does not directly connect to your home network.
Caséta Plug in Lamp Dimmer (PD-3PCL-WH)
The Plug-in Lamp Dimmer must be plugged in within 30ft of the Caséta Smart Hub or Caséta Wireless Repeater and adds up to 30 ft of range to your system. Only one Caséta Plug-in lamp dimmer can be used as a range extender in a Caséta system.
Here are some additional things to consider concerning the Caséta Plug-in Lamp Dimmer:
- All Plug-in Lamp Dimmers count toward the 75-device system limit.
- The first Plug-in Lamp Dimmer added to the system automatically becomes the range extender.
- A lamp does not need to be connected to the Plug-in Lamp Dimmer for it to function as a range extender.
If you have more than one Plug-in Lamp Dimmer in your system follow the steps below to view which unit is acting as the range extender:
- Open the Lutron app
- Tap the Settings icon in the top left corner
- Tap Advanced.
- Tap Range Extender. The name of the device acting as the extender is displayed on this screen.
To change the device acting as the range extender there are two options:
- Physically switch the locations of the Plug-in Lamp Dimmer currently acting as the range extender with a different Plug-in Lamp Dimmer. Then, edit the device names in the Lutron App to match their new locations.
- Delete all Plug-in Lamp Dimmers from the Lutron app, then add them back into the app. The first Plug-in dimmer added back into the app automatically becomes the range extender.
