This article provides step-by-step instructions to activate RadioRA 3 Clear Connect Type-X (CCX) devices via the Lutron Designer software and the Lutron mobile application (iOS/Android).

Before You Begin

  • Ensure the most recent version of Lutron Designer is installed. The latest version can be found at MyLutron.com in the Resources tab.
    • Using your myLutron account, review Application Note 745 regarding best practices for Type X devices, Gateway/Processor placement, and overall design.
  • All steps must be completed on-site. Remote activation is currently not supported.
  • Verify the smartphone/tablet being used is Bluetooth capable and running the most recent version of the Lutron App.
    • Bluetooth devices such as Airpods and Apple Watches can interfere with device activation. Power them off or unpair them before CCX device activation.
    • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the smartphone/tablet and the Lutron App has Bluetooth access enabled on your devices.
  • Reference Creating a new system without Internet / Router if an active Internet connection is unavailable on-site.
  • Check that the processor is at least 5 ft (2 m) away from any other source of 2.4GHz wireless devices (e.g. routers, wireless access points, smart/IoT devices, etc.)

How it works

Activating Type-X devices differs from how Type-A devices are activated. This is a high-level breakdown of the process:

  • Sync the activation data to the Cloud
  • Use Bluetooth on your phone to activate the Type-X devices
  • Wait 15 minutes for the mesh network and transfer to complete
  • Get Device Status within the software to fill in the serial numbers

Designer Software

Follow the steps below while in the Lutron Designer software:

1. Ensure at least one Clear Connect Type X device (e.g. Sunnata or Lumaris) has been added to the design tab. If you have multiple processors, confirm the correct processor is selected in the Assigned To drop-down.

Note: This drop-down does not appear for systems with only one processor.

2. Customize and program the device as needed.

  • Click the Zone Name to rename the zone or move it to another room.
  • Complete any programming needed in the program tab.

3.  Before activating in the app, follow the steps below to complete a system sync:

a. Navigate to the activate tab and select clear connect type x devices from the drop-down menu.

b. Select the Link from the Selected Link drop-down menu.

c. Click Sync with the System.

Note: If prompted, select Yes to sync any homeowner edits found during this step. If No is selected, any edits done by the homeowner will be erased.

4. Open the Lutron app to continue device activation and follow the steps below:

Lutron App

1. Sign in to the Lutron app as a Professional using your myLutron account.

2. Select RadioRA 3 / HomeWorks / Athena.

3. Select the Place name in the Place list.

4. Select Yes when prompted to activate any unactivated devices. If no prompt appears, ensure that the Designer Software Instructions were completed successfully.

5. Select the room where the first unactivated devices are. Once a room is selected, all Clear Connect Type-X devices with a button will begin to slowly flash. Devices without buttons (e.g. Lumaris Tunable White controllers) will not react right away.

Note: Device indicator lights on devices with buttons will begin to flash in one of two ways:

  • Not activated: Slow flash (3 seconds on, 1 second off)
  • ActivatedQuick flash (1 second on, 1 second off)

6. Select the device you want to activate and review its in-app instructions.

Note: Reference the Device Discovery Troubleshooting steps if the device you are activating is not listed.

    • Devices with Buttons (e.g. Sunnata Dimmer or Keypad): Press and hold a button on the device you are activating until its LEDs flash quickly. The device appears in the Lutron app once it is heard by the phone.

    • Devices without Buttons (e.g. Lumaris Tunable White Tape Light Controller): Walk near the device being activated. The lights dim and the device displays in the Lutron app when the phone hears it. Scroll through the heard devices using the next and previous arrows until the device you want to activate is blinking.

7. Click a device with an arrow on it to activate the selected device to that device slot in the app. The device stops flashing once it is selected. A green check mark indicates successful device activation.

Note: Reference the Device Activation Troubleshooting steps if the device fails to activate.

Repeat the above steps for any remaining devices you wish to activate.

8. Exit to the main screen of the app by pressing the back arrow at the top left, then Exit at the top right.

    • A pop-up appears to remind you to sync your activation changes back to Lutron Designer. Return to your computer.

10. Verify device activation in the Lutron Designer software.

  1. Go to the activate tab.
  2. Change the drop-down to clear connect type x devices
  3. Click Get Device Status and note the device serial numbers in Lutron Designer.

Important: Perform the steps above to prevent accidental overwrites in the project.

11.  Wait 15 minutes before completing a transfer. The remaining time is tracked in the Lutron app above the Devices tab.

Note: Reference the Transfer Issues Troubleshooting steps if the transfer fails.

Troubleshooting

Device Discovery Troubleshooting

Problem: Device does not appear in the Lutron app to activate

Action:

  1. Verify a Sync with System has been completed from the Designer software after devices were added. Then force close and re-launch the Lutron app.

  1. Open the Lutron Designer software and select the activate tab. Then select Processors to ensure your processor is activated. Each activated processor displays a serial number and MAC address.

Note: To check which processor a device is assigned to, navigate to the design tab and select Link Assignment

    1. Factory default the device.

    Devices with buttons:

    1. Triple-tap the bottom button and hold it until the device begins to flash.
    2. Release the button as soon as the device starts flashing and rapidly triple-tap it again. Do not hold the button again.
    3. Keypads and switches rapidly flash, and dimmers scroll up and down to indicate a successful reset.

Note: The triple-tap hold and then triple-tap release process is time-sensitive. If the device does not respond after the second triple-tap, repeat the above steps while tapping faster.

    Devices without buttons:

    1. Open the Lutron app.
    2. Exit the system.
    3. Select RadioRA 3 / HomeWorks / Athena.
    4. Tap More options.
    5. Select Reset devices and follow the in-app instructions.

    Device Activation Troubleshooting

    Problem: Device fails to activate

    Action:

    • Ensure there are no Bluetooth/2.4GHz devices nearby or connected to your phone. This includes smartwatches, wireless headsets/earbuds, or other related hardware.
    • Toggle the Bluetooth setting off and on from your device's Settings app. Do not toggle Bluetooth from a widget or quick access menu. Power cycle your mobile device after toggling the Bluetooth setting.
    • Confirm the device you are activating is within 25 ft (7.6 m) of 2 other CCX devices and no further than 75ft from the processor. For more details on range, see the Wireless Setup Guide.

    Transfer Issue Troubleshooting

Problem: Lutron Designer fails to transfer to the system

    Action:

    • Ensure 15 minutes have elapsed since activating devices before attempting a transfer.
    • Confirm the device you are activating is within 25 ft (7.6 m) of 2 other clear connect type X devices and no further than 75ft (22.9 m) from the processor. For more details on range, see the Wireless Setup Guide

Problem: Related devices continue to fail the activation or transfer stage.

    Action:

    1. Factory default the related device(s) (See Device Discovery Troubleshooting above).
    2. Delete device(s) from the design tab in Lutron Designer.
    3. Force Full Transfer the project in the transfer tab by navigating to the Advanced Settings section in the sidebar.
    4. Add the device back into the project.
    5. Re-activate the device.
    6. Force Full Transfer to reapply the device to the database.
