Lutron Dimmer or Switch is Tripping AFCI Breaker

What Will I Observe or Experience?

The AFCI breaker trips when a neutral-based Lutron control powers on. This issue occurs when a neutral-based control is installed in a multi-gang wallbox where neutral wires from different breakers in the wallbox are bundled together, or the control and load are connected to different neutrals.

Note: This issue typically only occurs when the Lutron control is powered from an AFCI circuit breaker.

Why Is This Happening?

AFCI breakers work by monitoring whether the current flowing out through the hot wire returns through the corresponding neutral wire. If the load-side neutrals from multiple AFCI breakers are interconnected, the return current may be shared among them, preventing all the current from returning through the original breaker's neutral.

What Should I Do to Resolve It?

Lutron recommends consulting a licensed electrician in these situations to ensure that the wiring from the breaker to the control and load is correct and meets all local or national requirements.
