Which Lutron Residential System is Best for Me?
This article highlights the various features of Lutron's current offerings of residential home automation systems.
Skip To: Shared Features | Caséta | RadioRA 3 | Homeworks QSX
Before We Begin
Lutron currently offers three home automation systems for residential use: Caséta, RadioRA 3, and Homeworks QSX. While these systems share a variety of features, there are differences between them in terms of scale and design. In the following sections, we break down what features these systems share, the options and designs that are exclusive to each system, and the rough scale/range we recommend for each system.
Additionally, links are provided to each system's webpage for technical details like device features, specification sheets, installation manuals, and where to buy.
Throughout this article, you will see the terms load(s) and load type(s) regularly mentioned. This can refer to what the Lutron devices are controlling:
- Lighting loads
- Motor loads
- Fan loads
- General purpose loads
Or the technology the load type utilizes:
- LED
- Incandescent
- Halogen
- AC
- DC
For an in-depth technical review of the rules and guidelines for all Lutron systems (legacy, residential, and commercial), please see our Residential/Commercial System Rules Specifications.
Shared Features
The features listed in this section are universal across all three systems. Some features may vary visually in the Lutron App, or offer additional options per system, but core functionality remains the same.
Smart Hubs and Processors
Every system uses a Smart Hub or Processor (specific to that system) that acts as a "brain" to communicate with the Lutron dimmers, switches, remotes, keypads, and shades installed in your home. The hub/processor must be hardwired (connected via ethernet cable) to your network as it is the only Lutron device generating network traffic. All other Lutron devices communicate via Clear Connect RF technology or are hardwired to the processor.
Hardwiring the hub or processor also ensures reliable access to the internet for astronomical time clocks and geolocation information to execute scheduled events. For example, automatically turning lights on at dusk and off at dawn or when arriving/leaving home.
Lutron App
The Lutron app (available on iOS and Android) allows for local and remote control of your Lutron lighting and shading devices. Additionally, users can create schedules and scenes for customized control. One login can be shared with up to 10 concurrent users.
3rd Party Integrations
Lutron's residential lighting systems are compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Additional 3rd party integrations vary by system. Refer to each system's webpage (linked below) for a list of current integration partners.
Pico Remotes
Control your Lutron dimmers, switches, or fan controls wirelessly from a Pico remote. Activate multiple devices simultaneously or pair a Pico remote to an existing in-wall switch or dimmer for another point of control without running additional wires. With a 10-year typical battery life, the Pico is virtually maintenance-free.
Supports Multiple Load Types
- Incandescent
- Halogen
- Electronic Low-Voltage (ELV)
- Magnetic Low-Voltage (MLV)
- LED
- Fans
Refer to device/system specification sheets for load ratings and installation applications before installing. We also recommend verifying LED compatibility with Lutron dimmers via the LED Compatibility Tool and LED Product Selection Tool.
