Why Upgrading Lutron Designer is Required for Enhanced Communications to the Processor
The Lutron Designer application communicates to multiple ports existing on the processors, each serving different features and purposes. As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting personal data and privacy, Lutron regularly evaluates the security capabilities of all communication channels against current cybersecurity standards. These security enhancements provide customers with state-of-the-art authentication, end-to-end encryption, and data integrity features, all essential components for a secure and reliable digital experience.
With the upcoming 25.4+ release of Lutron Designer, we've identified an opportunity to strengthen one of our proprietary application protocols with an additional layer of mutual authentication. This security improvement ensures that the processor and Lutron Designer verify each other's identity before establishing a secure connection.
What Problems Might I Experience if I Don't Update?
Lutron strives to take care of all circumstances and needs of our customers. That's why we implement changes in a manner that brings the greatest benefits while preserving existing experiences and workflows wherever possible.
For users of older version releases of Lutron Designer (25.3 and below), processor activation, processor firmware upgrade, and transfers to the processor will continue to work. Lutron Designer may show error pop-ups and communication failures to the processors, despite the prior mentioned core functionality remaining operational.
The following features rely on the updated communication channel and may not function properly:
Programming:
-
- Daylighting calibration
- Tools - Shade IHA
- Set date time in transfer screen
Activation:
-
- QS device
- Drivers
- QSM sensor
Firmware upgrade:
-
- QS devices
Diagnostics:
-
- Non-CCX devices
- On/off control in CCX diagnostics screen
What Triggers this Change in the System?
Processors Already In The Field
Existing processors that are activated within a system will continue to support the current communication protocol even after receiving the 25.4+ firmware update. This means that any processors receiving automatic updates will continue to communicate with the existing Lutron Designer version being used for that system, until the project is updated (described next). The processor will automatically upgrade its security protocol only once it detects communication from Lutron Designer version 25.4+. This automatic upgrade occurs after the project is opened using Lutron Designer 25.4+ without requiring a database transfer.
New Installations of Processors
Once a processor upgrades to the enhanced security protocol, it will no longer fully communicate with older versions of Lutron Designer (25.3 and below). New processors shipped with firmware 25.4+ will use the enhanced security protocol by default. These processors will require Lutron Designer 25.4+ for complete functionality, including all programming and diagnostic features.
