Device and Zone Lockouts in Lutron Designer
Device Lockout
Device Lockout disables the system execution of button programming on a device. This means keypad button presses from the physical keypad or the Lutron app will not affect the system. When the user interacts with a locked-out device, the status LEDs on the device will rapidly flash.

- Navigate to program
- Select devices from the dropdown menu
- Select any Pico, Keypad, or Zone Controller with programmable buttons

Zone Lockout
Prevents a zone’s output from being affected by any command (e.g., Button Press, Lutron App, 3rd Party Integration). There is no Status LED feedback during Zone Lockout.

Zone – Lock Local Control New
A type of zone lockout that prevents direct input on a physical dimmer or switch from affecting the zone it controls. It does, however, allow for all system control to affect the zone. This includes keypad button presses that affect the zone, app control, etc. When the user interacts with a device whose zone has been locally locked, the status LEDs on the device will rapid flash.

Lockout Applications
Party Mode
During an event or party, the system owner doesn’t want their guests to be able to manipulate the set load levels.
Lockout Type
Use Device Lockout to lockout local keypads throughout the home that guests have access to. This allows the system owner to still control lighting zones from the app and keypads that have not been locked out (i.e., keypad in the primary bedroom).
Notes:
-
- Zones of light controlled from a dimmer or switch will still be controllable from the dimmer or switch.
- When using device lockout, make sure that you don’t lock out the device that will also unlock your devices and/or zones when the time comes.
Unlock Trigger
Unlock the keypads via a keypad button press and/or timeclock event in case the system owner forgets to unlock the devices at the end of the event.
Cleaning Scene
While cleaning, the system owner wants to be able to wipe down the local controls without the load levels changing.
Lockout Type
Use Device Lockout for keypads and Zone – Lock Local Control for loads controlled by dimmers or switches that are present in the space. This way, load control can still be accomplished via the Lutron App or 3rd party integration.
Note: When using device lockout, make sure that you don’t lock out the device that will also unlock your devices and/or zones when the time comes.
Unlock Trigger
Unlock the keypads and zones via a keypad button press. A dual-action button type with a delay on the release could be used as a timer application to automatically unlock the keypads and zones after a set period of time.
Security Mode
During a security event, lighting zones are automatically locked out so they cannot be controlled until the security event is over.
Lockout Type
Zone lockout is automatically applied when zones are selected in the “Enter” tab. While device lockout could also be applied, it is typically not needed since the loads are uncontrollable from the zone lockout.
Note: Zones controlled by Sunnata dimmers and switches will not automatically be locked out. To lock these zones out, they would need to be manually locked out via zone – lock local control.
Unlock Trigger
Zones that are locked out in the “Enter” tab are automatically unlocked in the “Exit” tab of security mode programming. The ability to disable security mode can either be tied to a keypad button or to a contact closure input tied to the home’s security alarm panel. In addition, the timeout feature in security mode will automatically disable security mode after a set period of time.
Unsupported Devices
Fan controllers do not support lockout functionality as of Q1 2025.
