Creating a template project for RA3 and QSX

Templates may be used as an efficient method to get new projects up and running with pre-saved devices and programming information. Below is a best practice guide for creating a template. Templates may be created from a new project or an existing project with a few extra steps.

Note: It is very important you follow these steps, otherwise you may have multiple Projects sharing one Place.

  • Creating a Template from a Project will create a new Place for it to use
    • This will ensure updates to one Project made from a template will not affect another project from the same template
  • Do not Export to File multiple copies of a project and work on them as separate projects
    • They will all share the same Place and updates to one will then affect the others.
    • This makes it extremely difficult to recover files, and all devices will need to be reactivated to separate them from each other.

Creating a New Template:

  1. Create or open a Place/Project for template use.

  1. Set up custom devices in the Design Toolbox, create common scenes, preferred colors, common rooms and areas, etc.

    • Showing common rooms being created in the Design tab, and the Toolbox being customized
  2. Save your project to the Cloud by selecting File Save. This will be your 'Base' file for future templates.

    • If this is a new project, we'd recommend naming this Project something regarding 'Base' or 'Template' for ease of search later.
      • I.E. If these systems are for Apartments at 123 Apartment Ave, we'd recommend naming it 123 Apartment Ave Template
  1. Select Tools > Project Information > Create a new project from template

    • This will make a duplicate of the project with No Activation Information with its own Place.
    • It's Design, Link Assignment, Programming, and Device/Zone Names will be copied over.
  1. In the confirmation window, enter a new Project Name. This will also act as the new Place Name in your Places menu.

  1. The new Project will be automatically saved to the Cloud

  2. You may now activate devices to this new Project.

Creating more Projects off this Template

  1. Open the 'Base' template Place.

  1. Repeat Step 4 from above
