SECTION (1):  CHOOSING THE CORRECT DIMMER

There are two main factors that will help you determine which Caseta In-wall Dimmer is best suited for your application:

  1. Do you have a Neutral connection (White Wire) in your switch box?
US houses built from the mid 1980's typically have a neutral (white) wire in the switch box.  The neutral (white) wires are typically tied together with a wirenut.  Here is a picture of a typical switch box that contains neutral connections:

  image.png

If you do not have a neutral wire in the switch box, you must use either the PD-6WCL or PD-10NXD.

  1. What Load (lamp) type will you be controlling?
  • Incandescent / Halogen:  Use PD-6WCL or PD-10NXD
  • LED Lamps/Bulbs: Use PD-6WCL, PD-5NE**, or PD-10NXD
  • LED Fixture:  See fixture manufacturers recommendation
  • Fixtures requiring reverse phase dimming:  Must use PD-5NE**
  • Electronic Low Voltage (ELV):  Must use PD-5NE**
  • Magnetic Low Voltage (MLV):  Use PD-5NE** or PD-10NXD (see notes below)
** PD-5NE requires a neutral connection

SECTION (2):  PRODUCT INSTALLATION

(2.1) PD-6WCL:  In-Wall Smart Dimmer

PRODUCT DETAILS
  • No neutral wire required
  • Works with up to 150W dimmable LED or 600W incandescent/halogen bulbs
  • Can control up to 17 bulbs (based on 8.5W LED bulb, 60 W incandescent equivalent
  • Use with Pico remote for multi-location dimming (Pico sold separately)
    • Up to 10 Pico remotes can be paired with 1 Caseta Dimmer
NOTES ON INSTALLATION
  • If there is no ground wire in your electrical box, cap off the green wire from the dimmer.  A ground wire connection is not required for this dimmer to function properly.  A ground wire may be required by local electrical code.
  • The dimmer does not have polarity with regards to input/output, so the black wires can be reversed without affecting the device's performance.

ADJUSTING THE LOW-END OR HIGH-END TRIM
Adjusting the trim settings simply "cuts off" a portion of the dimming curve that might cause some LEDs to exhibit poor performance (flickering or flashing).  Changing the trim allows you to adjust the minimum (low-end) and maximum (high-end) settings of the dimmer.
NOTE:  Sometimes when changing the low or high-end trim, it may be necessary to power cycle the dimmer by using the FASS switch at the bottom of the dimmer before the changes take effect.

The ADVANCED INSTALLATION GUIDE will guide you through several additional installation topics beyond what was covered in this article.

(2.2) PD-5NE:  In-Wall Smart Dimmer for ELV+ Lighting

PRODUCT DETAILS
  • Neutral wire required
  • Works with dimmable LEDs, ELV, MLV, incandescent and halogen bulbs
  • Can be configured for Forward or Reverse Phase dimming
  • Able to control up to 29 bulbs (based on 8.5W LED bulb, 60 W incandescent equivalent
  • Use Pico remote for multi-location dimming (Pico sold separately)
    • Up to 10 Pico remotes can be paired with 1 Caseta Dimmer
NOTES ON INSTALLATION
  • The PD-5NE dimmer will not work if the Hot (BLACK) and Load (RED) wires are reversed.
  • The PD-5NE dimmer will not work if the Neutral (WHITE) wire is not connected.
  • If there is no ground wire in your electrical box, cap off the green wire from the dimmer.  A ground wire connection is not required for this dimmer to function properly.  A ground wire may be required by local electrical code.

CHANGING THE PHASE OF THE DIMMER
The PD-5NE is configured at the factory to dim Electronic Low-Voltage (ELV) transformers using reverse phase dimming.  Please confirm that type of transformer is electronic low-voltage or requires reverse phase dimming.  If that is the case, there is no need for you to change the phase of the dimmer.

The ADVANCED INSTALLATION GUIDE will guide you through several additional installation topics beyond what was covered in this article.

Bottom 3 LEDs are blinking rapidly1. Dimmer overloaded (>500W)1. Verify load is less than 500W
2. More than 20 Ballasts or LED drivers on dimmer2. Change to reverse phase
3. ELV load not driven in reverse phase3. Verify red wire from dimmer is not shorted to neutral or ground.
4. Red wire shorted to Neutral or Ground
Middle 3 LEDs are blinking rapidly1. Dimmer overloaded (>500W)1. Verify load is less than 500W
2. Unit driving load in wrong phase2. Change the phase of the dimmer

(2.3) PD-10NXD:  Caséta PRO Dimmer

PRODUCT DETAILS
  • Neutral connection optional, but recommended where available
  • Capable of controlling higher wattage circuits
  • 3-way control using a mechanical switch
  • 3-way and 4-way / multilocation control using Pico wireless remotes (Pico sold separately)
  • The neutral (WHITE) wire is optional for the PD-10NXD.  If a neutral connection is available in the electrical box, we recommend connection the neutral (WHITE) wire from the dimmer.  Connecting the neutral wire can resolve issues associated with minimum load requirements.
  • The RED wire must be connected to the load and the BLACK wire must be connected to the Line/Hot.  The product will not work if reversed.  If the dimmer does not work after installation, reverse the two wires.
